Teachings and transmission of the precepts of the bodhisattvas (Jukai)
The Jukai ceremony is an essential stage in the life of a Soto Zen practitioner. It involves receiving the Bodhisattva's precepts (Kai) and, in so doing, taking refuge in the three treasures: Buddha, Dharma, Sangha.
Important! These teachings on the theme of ‘Jukai’ are open to everyone, even those who have already done the ceremony or wish to do so at a later date.
Information on Jukai ceremonies for the year 2025
Various rituals are associated with this ceremony, making it a particularly powerful experience:
- Write a letter to Master Wang-Genh expressing your wish to receive the precepts and describing your background.
- A one-to-one meeting with the Jukai master.
- Symbolically cutting the first lock of hair during the ceremony
- Receive a rakusu and an ordination name
- It is possible to sew the rakusu yourself, or to buy it from the temple for a certain sum (please ask the temple for the amount). These are sewn by older practitioners. For those who sew themselves, it is advisable to start sewing before the week of Jukai, as the days are very busy that week (allow €20 for the sewing kit). Finishing touches are possible under the guidance of elders such as Anette Seigyo Beck and Walter Eko Krepulat.
Teaching days devoted to the precepts will precede the sesshin, during which the various ceremonies will take place.
Who is it for?
This ceremony is open to anyone wishing to receive the sixteen precepts of the Bodhisattva. If you have not sewn the rakusu, you can buy it on site (please ask the temple for the cost).
If you have already taken part in the Jukai ceremony or would like to do so at a later date, you are welcome to attend the teachings.
